veteran Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu. The celebrated 77-year-old saxophonist died at Kibuli
Hospital on Thursday, September 24, 2026, following a violent confrontation in
Kibuli Market Zone B, Makindye Division.
According to preliminary witness accounts, Matovu
had just dropped off a woman, identified as Rose Tumusiime, when he was
confronted by a man believed to be known to her. The assailant reportedly assaulted Tumusiime first
before punching Matovu. Boda boda rider Menya Chris Frank, who rushed the
injured musician to the hospital, stated that the punch caused Matovu to fall
and hit his head on the ground. Despite emergency medical efforts, Matovu succumbed
to his injuries.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael
Kawala confirmed that police at Kabalagala are investigating the incident as a
suspected murder. A dedicated task team has been deployed to the scene
to establish the exact sequence of events, identify the attacker, and confirm
the motive. Police have cautioned that claims of a romantic
dispute remain unverified. Tumusiime was taken into police custody to assist
with investigations and was later brought back to the scene as detectives
pieced together the events.
