FORT PORTAL, UGANDA — The Lion of Tooro has fallen.
Tooro Kingdom and Uganda are mourning the death of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, who passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m. He was 34 years old. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described the King's death as an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the entire nation of Uganda. King Oyo's death brings to an end one of the most remarkable royal stories in Uganda's modern history. He ascended the Tooro throne on September 12, 1995, at just three years of age, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. For nearly 31 years, Omukama Oyo remained a central figure in the cultural life of Tooro and Uganda. His reign began when he was a child and continued into adulthood, allowing an entire generation of Batooro to grow up knowing him as their King.
A King Who Grew Up on the Throne
King Oyo became internationally known as one of the world's youngest reigning monarchs when he inherited the throne at the age of three. His early years as King were guided through traditional regency arrangements until he reached adulthood. Upon turning 18, he assumed full operational control of the affairs of the Tooro Kingdom. Over the years, he became more than a young monarch who attracted international attention. He grew into a respected cultural leader who sought to preserve the heritage, identity and traditions of the people of Tooro while also promoting development within the kingdom. His reign was marked by efforts to advance tourism, education, cultural preservation and development in Tooro.

News of the King's death has sent shockwaves across Tooro and Uganda. At Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, mourners gathered as the reality of the monarch's death began to sink in. For many people across Tooro, King Oyo was not simply a traditional ruler; he was the only King they had ever known. His death therefore represents not only the loss of a monarch but also the closing of a major chapter in the history of modern Tooro.
The Prime Minister has called upon the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this difficult period.
The Crown Will Continue
Despite the grief surrounding the King's death, the Tooro Kingdom has assured its subjects that the institution of the monarchy will continue. According to the Kingdom's Prime Minister, King Oyo left behind a Prince who is expected to become his heir. The identity of the Prince will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, following the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom. The Kingdom is expected to provide further information concerning funeral arrangements and the traditional mourning ceremonies. The death of a Tooro monarch also carries deep cultural significance. Traditional processes will now guide the kingdom through a period of mourning and eventually towards the installation of a new Omukama.
