More than a week after twin earthquakes devastated northern Venezuela, many affected communities report receiving limited government assistance. Residents and foreign rescue workers have led much of the search-and-recovery effort in collapsed neighborhoods.
An early Monday aftershock frayed nerves but caused no additional major damage, according to officials. The United Nations said more than 500 aftershocks have been recorded and at least 2,500 structures were affected, most fully collapsed.
The United States has pledged more than $300 million in aid and reopened the Port of La Guaira to speed deliveries. China, the Netherlands and other nations have also announced support packages.
