Rotary Club of Kampala North Explores Aviation Sector During UCAA Visit

Members of the Rotary Club of Kampala North have gained an inside look at Uganda’s aviation sector after visiting the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) at Entebbe International Airport on September 17.

The visit, organised under the club’s vocational service programme, was aimed at exposing Rotarians to different professions and sectors while providing opportunities to learn from professionals outside their usual fields of work.

The delegation was led by Rotarian Ronald Mutebi, who represented the club president during the visit.

The Rotarians were received by Christopher Omondi, UCAA’s Manager of Operations, who took them through the Authority’s mandate, administrative structure and key responsibilities.

Omondi also shared insights into UCAA’s achievements and some of the challenges involved in managing airport operations, maintaining safety standards and ensuring efficient passenger services.

The visitors learned that UCAA’s responsibilities extend across a wide range of airport activities, including passenger facilitation, airside operations, aircraft parking and marshalling, terminal management and emergency response.

The briefing provided the Rotarians with a closer understanding of the extensive work that takes place behind the scenes to keep Entebbe International Airport operating safely and efficiently.

Following the briefing, the delegation was taken on a guided tour of the airport facilities, giving members an opportunity to see first-hand the infrastructure and systems supporting airport operations.

One of the major highlights of the visit was a tour of the newly constructed passenger terminal building.

The terminal is part of UCAA’s ongoing infrastructure development programme at Entebbe International Airport. UCAA has said the 20,000-square-metre facility is intended to increase the airport’s capacity and improve passenger handling as air traffic continues to grow.

For the Rotarians, the tour offered a practical perspective on the scale of infrastructure and coordination required to operate an international airport.

Learning Beyond the Workplace

The visit forms part of Rotary’s vocational service, which encourages members to share professional knowledge, learn from other sectors and use their skills to make a positive contribution to society.

For the Kampala North members, the experience provided an opportunity to step outside their regular professional environments and gain first-hand knowledge of an industry that plays a key role in connecting Uganda with the region and the rest of the world.

Entebbe International Airport serves as Uganda’s main international gateway, handling passenger and cargo traffic to and from regional and international destinations.

As passenger traffic continues to grow, UCAA has continued to invest in airport infrastructure and operations. Efficient aviation services are also important to Uganda’s tourism, trade and wider economic activity.

The visit concluded with the Rotary delegation completing its tour of the airport facilities and the new passenger terminal, leaving members with a deeper appreciation of the people, infrastructure and systems that keep Uganda’s aviation sector running.
