The Ministry of Health hon DR. Chris
Baryomunsi has officially declared that Uganda remains entirely Ebola-free
as of October 25, 2026. Following the successful completion of monitoring for
all contact cases linked to a recent incident in neighboring Kenya, health
authorities have escalated preventive measures to guard against potential
cross-border transmission—most notably implementing a mandatory 21-day
quarantine for travelers entering from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC).in his health declaration he said:
"I would like to re-emphasize to all Ugandans and the International Community that as of today, 25th, October, 2026, Uganda remains EBOLA FREE”. All 60 identified contacts linked to Kenya’s recently reported Ebola case have completed their required observation period without presenting symptoms, clearing local active trace chains.
To prevent viral entry from high-risk
zones, Uganda has instituted a mandatory 21-day quarantine protocol for all
citizens and travelers returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC). According to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, the incubation
period for the Ebola virus ranges from 2 to 21 days. A full 3-week
quarantine covers the maximum incubation window to ensure any asymptomatic
carriers are identified before entering the community. Uganda's heightened
vigilance stems from its experience during the 2022 Sudan ebolavirus
outbreak, which affected 9 districts, resulted in 142 confirmed cases and 55
confirmed deaths, and was officially declared over on January 11, 2023.
For the quarantine directive to
achieve maximum public health safety without creating unintended social or
economic disruptions, three key operational pillars have been highlighted:
|
Strategy |
Action Item & Purpose |
|
1. Financial & Food Support |
Provide basic relief, including food
supplies and income support, for quarantined returnees to ensure full
compliance without economic hardship. |
|
2. Transparent Data Sharing |
Publish daily monitoring counts and
public health updates to maintain trust and demonstrate the necessity of
containment measures. |
|
3. Border Screening Maintenance |
Keep legal DRC border checkpoints
fully open and operational with rigorous temperature and symptom screening to
discourage travelers from using unmonitored informal routes. |
Border Monitoring: Continued deployment of surveillance
teams at official border posts along the DRC–Uganda frontier.
Public Awareness: Ongoing media campaigns emphasizing
early reporting of symptoms and adherence to travel guidelines.
